BUSHENYI- Just a week after the nomination of Parliamentary aspirants from all over the country, two candidates have so far withdrawn from the race in Bushenyi district.
The duo Dr Nicholas Karuhanga wo was nominated to contest for Igara West Parliament seat and Nduhukire Don Nasser aka Don Nasser who was eyeing the Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality seat.
Dr Karuhanga contested in the NRM party primaries and lost to Gaffa Mbwatekamwa, the Kasambya County MP who shifted his political base to Bushenyi July.
Karuhanga later protested the results and petitioned the NRM Elections Tribunal, which threw out his petition. He was last week nominated as an independent candidate.
In a letter addressed to NRM party vice Chairperson Western region, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, Karuhanga notes that his withdrawal from the race follows wide consultations with the party Chairperson President Museveni and other senior members of the party.
“So the sole purpose of this letter is to inform your office that my candidature withdraw takes immediate effect as I embark on a nationwide campaign for our party chairman Gen. Yoweri Museveni”, reads the letter.
Speaking to NRM leaders in Bushenyi town on Friday, Baryomunsi asked party leaders to focus on cohesion and support the party’s flag bearers.
Don Nasser who was contesting as an independent told the press that “this decision was not a personal decision but was highly influenced by my party which I highly subscribe to. In their wisdom, they thought that my candidature would divide the NRM votes between myself and the flag bearer giving leverage to an opposition candidate which would be detrimental and highly prejudicial to the NRM party objectives”.
Dr Karuhanga now leaves the race to Prof Tarsis Kabwegyere, who is also standing as an independent candidate for Igara West, Mbwatekamwa the NRM flag bearer and FDC’s Brian Katana.
Don Nasser on the other hand leaves Bushenyi Municipality Parliamentary race to NRM’s Derrick Kabura, FDC’s Odo Tayeebwa, Yedidiya Nyakahangura (ANT), Ahebwe Rukira Eric (UPC), Twahika Dennis (Ind) and Akanduhura Keneth (Ind).
