KAMPALA- Officials from the Ministry of Education and sports have revealed that schools will be open upon receiving permission from the Ministry of Health.
This is according to the state Minister for Higher Education John Chrysostom Muyingo.
Minister Muyingo insists that irrespective of huge volumes of calls and appeals from schools managements and parents to reopen schools, the Educational centres won’t rush to open.
According to Minister Muyingo, they can only re-open the schools under guidance from the Health Ministry during this Coronavirus pandemic outbreak.Ministry of Education issues fresh orders for schools
“For us we are ready to re-open schools as soon as the Minister of Health and her team tells us the life of our children is safe. The responsibility of any government is to ensure that Ugandans are safe and healthy,” Muyingo said.
The minister was on a visit to Kasese District to assess the level of damage on education institutions caused by floods which ravaged the district last month.
He added that in the meantime, the Education Ministry will continue supporting the E-learning approaches as taken on by government to keep children engaged and enabling continuity of studying during the pandemic.
Muyingo further urges parents to engage their children in learning at home to minimise any kind of diversion into other activities that consume their time with no productivity.
Earlier this week, the Ministry of Health outlined a number of Standard Operating procedures to the Education and Sports Ministry that should be put in place if schools are to reopen.
This however seemed impossible to many Educationalists and parents on the implementation of these modalities in educating Ugandan children.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni ordered for the closure of schools on March 20th 2020 as the Government’s strategy to save over 15M Ugandans from contracting the novel Coronavirus.
Uganda has todate registered 1,013 coronavirus cases, 948 recoveries and no fatalities registered yet.
