Schools not to reopen soon, Minister Janet Museveni Calls off meeting with Education stakeholders

KAMPALA- The Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataha Museveni on Friday July 17th 2020 abruptly postponed the meeting she was slated to hold with leaders of schools, institutions and Universities of the yet to be known reasons.

Reliable information told this online publication that the meeting which was aimed at discussing the way forward as far as schools’ reopening is concerned was later called off and it never took place.

Another source revealed to us that the meeting was called off due to inside inconsistencies and re-scheduled for Friday July 24th, 2020 at State House still as had been agreed in the first instance.

The development comes as Members of the National Economy committee of Parliament have called for the cancellation of the 2020 academic year.

The call comes close to four months after the closure of schools and other educational institutions, as one of the measures to control the spread of Coronavirus Disease.

The legislators committee was meeting the State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education sector.

According to MPs, it is not feasible to re-open schools for the continuation of the academic year amidst the burden of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that were put in place to tame the virus.

Committee chairperson Hajjati Syda Bbumba noted that the procedures would put an enormous strain on the finances of schools forcing most of them to close.

The director of Basic and secondary education Ismael Mulindwa told MPs that the schools would reopen in phases starting with candidate classes as soon as the ministry observes how learning can be allowed to continue under the new SOPs.
