Rutenga Catholic Priest kidnapped, tortured and dumped at Police

KANUNGU- The Parish Priest of Rutenga Catholic Parish in Kinkizi East in Kanungu District Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate is nursing serious wounds after he was kidnapped by unknown people who tortured him and later dumped him at Kanungu Police Station.

It’s reported that Fr Andrew Tumukurate was kidnapped from Rutenga Catholic Church today Sept 2nd 2020, by men traveling in vehicle registration number UBD 340R.

Fr Tumukurate said that he was found attending to members of Rutenga Catholic Church Sacco and the kidnappers took unspecified amount of money which they later shared.

Father Tumukurate said that he was later driven at breakneck speed and taken to Kanungu Resort Hotel which belongs to Minister of State for Housing Dr Chris Baryomunsi, where he was tortured by the men while asking him why he was not supporting a Minister vying for Kinkizi East Parliamentary Seat and why he was distributing money.

However Fr Tumukurate is alleged to have told his tormentors that he was attending to the Church Sacco Members and not distributing money to them as alleged.

The kidnappers later dumped Fr Andrew Tumukurate at Kanungu Police Station where they abandoned him and was later released by Police after failing to charge him.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate did not respond to several calls by this Online Publication over the matter.

When contacted, Kanungu District Police Commander declined to divuldge into the circumstances under which the Priest was arrested, tortured and dumped at the Police.

The arrest of Fr Andrew Tumukurate comes a day before the NRM primary elections where the incumbent Dr Chris Baryomunsi is facing stiff competition from Deus Nkwasibwe also known as Omusisa for Kinkizi East Parliamentary Seat.
