KANUNGU- There was jubilation and cerebration by the residents of Nyarurambi village in Katete Sub County and Bugongi in Kambuga Sub County as they celebrated the commissioning of Nyarurambi Bridge on Saturday August 29th 2020.
The bridge which is the first time to be constructed was funded by Deus Nkwasibwe also known as Omusisa who is a National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate contesting to unseat Kinkizi East Member of Parliament Dr Chris Baryomunsi.
According to Katete LC 3 Chairman Johnson Turyahikayo Friday, the bridge has been an eye sore in the area where the residents used the tree logs to cross from either side but had cost lives and property in time of heavy rains.
Turyahikayo Friday said that all successive Members of Parliament including the current one had pledged to lobby for the construction of the bridge but up to now no one fulfilled the promise leaving the people in dilemma and will no alternatives but to cross using the logs or getting right into the river.
Turyahikayo said that the construction of the bridge will provide a shortcut for both motorists and pedestrians. He said that the route from Katete to Bugongi through Nyarurambi Bridge without going via Omukatoojo in Kambuga reduces the distance by 5 kms.
He thanked Deus Nkwasibwe (Omusisa) for looking beyond the horizon and realising the community needs which will endear him to the people even before he joins Parliament.
Kanungu District Secretary for Social Services Frank Byaruhanga who is also the Councilor for Mpungu sub County who attended the function said that the construction of Nyarurambi bridge was an important milestone in the development of the area because the district is committed to open up the road through the bridge which will make it a motorable road that will provide a shorter route from Kihihi to Rukungiri and also add value to the farm products grown in the area.
Byaruhanga noted that Nkwasibwe has initiated several Community projects which include construction classroom blocks, and building of Heath facilities without first joining the Parliament, thereby showing his capability to serve the people.
Speaking at the function Deus Nkwasibwe (Omusisa) said that it was unfortunate that the bridge was neglected by leaders who have represented the people in Parliament for many years and said that he is committed to work on community projects that benefit a wider number of people regardless of their social status.
Nkwasibwe thanked the community of Nyarurambi and Bugongi for accepting to work with him and assured that was the beginning of transformation of their area once elected in Parliament to represent them.
The function was attended by several NRM contestants at different levels especially from Kambuga and Katete sub counties and beyond. It was also attended by Caleb Tumwesimire Kipande who is contesting for the LC 5 Chairman seat in Kanungu District. Others who attended the function included Katete Sub County Woman District Councilor Lydia Mugisha, Kambuga Town Council Chairman Jack Mugisha, Kihihi Sub County LC 3 Chairman Nelson Natukunda and Deus Tweheyo who is contesting for Kihihi Town Council Chairmanship.
The prayers to commission the bridge were led by Kihihi Full Gospel Church Senior Pastor Justus Monday who is a resident of the area.
