President Museveni, Premier Rugunda mourn Omugurusi Festo Karwemera

KABALE- President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to the icon of the Runyankole-Rukiga local language author and translator, Omugurusi Festo Karwemera who passed on over the weekend.

Museveni described Karwemera as a gallant son of Uganda who promoted the language and culture of the Bakiga by writing many books.

“I learnt of the passing of Omugurusi Festo Karwemera, a gallant son of Uganda who promoted the language and culture of the Bakiga by writing many books; a gesture of preservation of the heritage of the African people.” Museveni said through his social media pages.

Museveni added that our mother tongues have a potentially great future if we could get more linguistic patriots to sensitise the population about the importance of our rich culture.

“We salute Omugurusi Karwemera for the crucial role he played and we pray that his outstanding service will be a source of inspiration and motivation to most Ugandans. May his soul Rest in Eternal Peace.” Museveni said.

Karwemera aged 95 died on Sunday morning at around 4am at Rugarama Hospital where he had been receiving treatment.

Karwemera was well known for his passion and love to promote the efficiency of speaking Runyankore-Rukiga languages on public functions and radio programs and has authored 17 books in Runyankore-Rukiga language that include the popular Katodozi (Dictionary) which he co-authored with President Museveni, translating the Holy Bible and the constitution of Uganda in the local language.
