KANUNGU- The Police in Kanungu have revealed circumstances under which Rutenga Catholic Parish Priest Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate was yesterday Sept 2nd 2020 arrested from the church premises in Rutenga Sub County in Kanungu District.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate said that Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate was arrested by unknown group people who brought him to the Police Station with his laptop and and a bag of money containing Ugx 1,629,300 (One million and six hundred twenty nine and three hundred shillings) and NRM letters for agents of one Zepher Mugisha who is contesting for the LC 5 Chairman seat.
“He was arrested by a group of people yet to be identified by names, however reliable source we have established that they have come from Dr Hon Chris Baryomunsi camp” Maate said I a statement last evening.
Maate also said that the Police was investigating a case of voter bribery under reference number SD 28/02/09/2020 which was reported by Mugisha Moses a resident of Karengye village, Eastern Ward in Kanungu Town Council in Kanungu District against Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate.
Maate however said that the Police was not involved in the arrest but the Priest was brought to Police by the yet to be identified people.
Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate told our reporter that he was bundled into a vehicle number UBD 340R from Rutenga Catholic Church about 30km away and was first taken to Kanungu Resort Hotel in Kanungu Town Council where he was tortured before he was dumped at Kanungu Police Station. He also narrated that the unidentified people who arrested him shared some of the unspecified amount of money among themselves and the little remaining money was brought to Police.
He explained that some of the money taken by the unidentified people belonged to the church Sacco and some of it belonged to himself and all was taken. He said that the thugs ransacked his residence at Rutenga Parish yet they did not have a search warrant nor arrest warrant.
Efforts to talk to Zepher Mugisha whose Agents letters were allegedly found with Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate were futile as his known phone was not available all day.
Maate said that Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate who was released on Police Bond, has since reported a case of robbery of his money by the unknown armed men.
“The Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate was released on Police Bond and he has actually reported robbery of his money by the unknown armed men” Maate said.
Our investigating reporter in Kanungu has since established that the vehicle registration number UBD 340R the alleged unidentified people who arrested Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate were traveling in, belongs to Kinkizi East Member of Parliament Dr Chris Baryomunsi.
However, Dr Baryomunsi has issued a statement distancing himself from the kidnap and arrest of Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate and denied any involvement.
“I’m saddened by the news of the kidnapping of Rev Fr Andrew Tumukurate of Rutenga Parish but also dismayed by the allegations of any of my involvement” Dr Baryomunsi posted this massage on social media distancing himself from the arrest of the Priest.
He said that he holds the clergy in high regard and will utmost respect, more especially Reverend Fathers of the Roman Catholic Church and he himself once wished and actually almost became one in his tender age.
By the time of writing this story, Fr Andrew Tumukurate had reported back to his work station after he was released on Police Bond.
