KABALE- The Police in Kabale district have arrested two people in connection to environmental degradation.
The Kigezi regional Police spokesman Elly Maate identified those in detention as Mutungi Cosmas 44 and Barijunaki Owen 32 years both residents of Kihorongwa village, Rwenyana parish, Rubaya sub county in Kabale district.
According to Mate, the duo was arrested today Monday July 13th 2020 around midday for the destruction of Hamuhambo and Kihorongwa wetlands in Rwenyana parish which they cultivate despite the continuous warnings from authorities.
They were arrested by police in conjunction with the district environment officer Ms Asiimwe Evas and the natural resources director Kabale Mrs Akatwijuka Rogers in partnership with the bataka who are against the same.
“We got a tip off from residents that the duo has been doing illicit economic activities in the wetlands irrespective of continued warnings to stop but all in vain,” Maate said.
He added that “we therefore rushed to the area and landed onto them. We have them in detention awaiting to be charged accordingly.”
Maate told this online publication that inquiries are underway at Kabale Central Police station vide SD 57/13/7/2020.
