Panic engulfs Kyambogo University as staff tests positive for COVID-19

KAMPALA- Kyambogo University has been hit by bad news after a staff tested positive for Covid-19, which led to the closure of the office of the dean of faculty of vocational studies.

According to Reuben Twinomujuni, the university senior public relations officer, the victim has been admitted and he is now receiving treatment at Mulago National referral hospital.

In a letter dated 30th October, the director for Human resource, Richard Manano confirmed the case to the university community causing panic in the Banda based University.

Manano further advised that all nine people in the office where the victim works are contacted and should be isolated from the community and monitored from their homes.

All the staff of Kyambogo University that are listed as contacts will be officially sent home where they will undergo 14 days of isolation and their offices will be fumigated.

During the period of self-isolation, Manano says the Ministry of Health will collect the samples from the contacts for Covid-19 testing. He has also advised them to work virtually from home during the period of isolation and also keep in touch with the relevant authorities at the University for any Developments.

This website has observed that Kyambogo University’s small gate, the security guards line up students and staff to check their temperature at the entry without ensuring social distancing, something that puts everyone at high risk to contract corona virus.

Universities have drastically relaxed from adhering to COVID-19 SOPs and seem not to have enough capacity to sanitize/fumigate lecture rooms and practical equipment used in practical lectures like computers. Keyboards, mice, and others like engineering, and sciences. These can also be channels that can spread COVID in an institution setting.

This has come at a time when Kyambogo University is preparing to host the presidential nominations next week on 2 and 3 November. The COVID cases are expected to increase in numbers in the institutions as a result of the way the situation is being handled from almost every institution.
