Opposition FDC accuses Police of Double Standards

KANUNGU- Kinkizi West Candidate on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket Brian Atuheire Batenda has vowed to carry on his campaign based on the Presidential and Parliamentary Act but not on the decrees which have no legal precedence.

Atuheire Batenda made the remarks today while addressing a press conference at Kanungu Inn in Kanungu Town Council where he accused the Security in Kanungu District of applying the guidelines retrogressively.

Batenda said that all the nominated Candidates have equal rights and therefore should be let to access the voters without restrictions based on Coronavirus pandemic excuses.

He gave an example of an incident which took place in Nyamirama Sub County where the general public had been watching a football game but when he arrived at the scene, the Police dispersed the crowds claiming that they were too many.

He said that it was not proper for the Police to allow the public together but only disperse them when he arrived.

He said that if the Police are not ready to follow the law then the players will have no alternatives but to defy them.

But when contacted, Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate said that anyone found campaigning without following the Electoral Commission guidelines will be stopped and those who will defy this will arrested and be prosecuted.
