NTUNGAMO- National resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries in Ntungamo municipality has been suspended following anticipated violence and fraudulent electoral process as the three candidates in the municipality Mayoral race are believed to have ferried voters from the neighboring sub counties to participate in the process.
Over 600 people were on Sunday night and Monday morning arrested from the centre of the municipality sleeping in various areas after security suspected that the individuals were not from the municipality but had been ferried to participate in the elections. Some of the arrested were on lorries impounded by police on check points coming to sleep over in town and vote in the morning.
The South Western region NRM elections coordinator Dr Dickson Kamukama suspended the election following an advice from the district security committee headed by the RDC Mr George Bakunda.
All the elections including councilors to the municipality and mayors were suspended forthwith. Dr Kamukama said the elections shall be held at a date to be announced.
Mr Bakunda said they reached the decision after meeting the candidates in the mayoral race after anticipating that the losing side may cause violence since the losing voters may want to justify why they were brought into the process.
The district NRM vice chairman Mr Evans Rutahweire said the district party branch could not stand having an election that is out rightly rigged even if all the candidates participated in the rigging.
Individuals arrested by security officials confessed not being from the municipality however tagging themselves on all the three candidates. The arrested include women and children.
