Minister Kanyike starts country wide tour of PWDs Government projects

KAMPALA- The new Minister of State for Disability and Elderly Affairs Hon Sarah Kanyike has started the country wide tour of Government funded projects being run by Persons with Disability (PWD).

Minister Kanyike started the tour in Mukono Municipality and Mukono District where several Persons With Disability Associations received funding from the government.

According to Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development Communications Officer Frank Mugabi, the PWD received the fund aimed at supporting groups that merged together as required by government to get the funding.

Mugabi explained that the groups received funding under the National Special Grants that are specifically tailored to support the PWD to uplift their welfare and improve their standards of living.

Mugabi said that members of PWD have been investing the funds they received into income generating projects that include poultry, tailoring, piggery and goat farming.

Speaking after the tour of Mukono based PWD projects, Minister Kanyike appreciated the groups that adhered to the government guidelines and put the funds received to proper use and pledged that those who perform well will get more funding.

The Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development is supporting organised Special Interest Groups with seed capital that remain a revolving fund among the groups and this has been extended to Women under the Uganda Women Empowerment Program (UWEP), Elderly Fund (SAGE), and Youth Livelihoods Fund among others.

According to Frank Mugabi, there are 7,000 PWD groups across the country and in last financial year the government injected in them Ugx 3 billion which has been increased to Ugx 5 billion in the current financial year.

In Mukono District and Municipality, the PWD groups have been receiving Ugx 50 million respectively.
