BUSHENYI- The Police in Bushenyi District are investigating circumstances under which an artisanal miner has been buried alive in a gold mine.
The Greater Bushenyi Police spokesman Martial Tumusiime identifies the deceased as a 23-year-old Gaston Gumisiriza, resident of Karimunyari in Kyamuhunga Sub-county Igara West County Bushenyi district.
John Bakyenga, the Karimunyari LC I Chairperson, says the deceased went together with four others in a gold mine on Saturday morning.
He, however, says they heard them shortly after calling for help after the mine caved in and suffocated Gumisiriza to death.
“We heard loud screams and rushed to see what had happened only to find miners buried under the ground. We rescued them but one was already dead,” he said.
He said Gumisiriza and his colleagues have been mining gold from the area for long. Sula Nuwe, the Kyamuhunga sub county councilor, says gold mining has become a danger to the community.
He says open ditches have been dug everywhere in search of Gold, which exposes residents to danger.
Tumusiime, says they have sealed off the area to allow for investigations into the incident. The Police mouthpiece, says miners have failed to embrace safety measures while looking for gold to avoid incidents of this nature.
