RUKIGA– A row has erupted between Muhanga town council authorities and a businessman in Muhanga town council over the ownership of the plot of land in Rukiga district.
The disputed land is located in Muhanga cell in Muhanga town council in Rukiga district.
According to Charles Byarugaba, a resident of Nyamabare cell in Muhanga town council who also operates a hotel in the town council said that, in 1996 he was contacted by officials from South-Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation requesting him to give them part of his land in Muhanga town council where they can temporarily construct their offices.
Byarugaba said that in 2016, the officials from South-Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation vacated his land and when he tried to develop it early this week, the town council authorities’ stopped him claiming that the land was handed to them by officials from South-Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation in 2015.
Byarugaba wonders why the authorities are stopping him from development his land yet he has the agreement of the land that he bought way back in 1972.
The Town Clerk for Muhanga Town Council, Eudia Mutabazi said that they are planning to construct a water borne toilet on the disputed land since there was is no public toilet in the entire town council.
Mutabazi said that they cannot allow Byarugaba to develop the plot yet the officials from South-Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation handed over the property in the land to the town council in 2015.
Speaking to our reporter on phone, an Administrator from the Ministry of Water and Environment South Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation Lavic Mucunguzi Kagooro said that government compensated Byarugaba before they occupied his land.
