EXTRA TIME: Electoral Commission extends nomination period for Local Council elections

KAMPALA- The Electoral Commission has announced that it has extended the nomination for candidates who wish to participate in the Local Government Council Elections.

According to Press Statement issued today Oct 1st 2020, by the Electoral Commission Chairman Justice Byabakama Mugyenyi Simon, the nomination for Local Government Councils which started on Sept 21st 2020 and was supposed to end today Oct 1st 2020 has been extended for 4 more days and will end on 5th October 2020.

According to Justice Byabakama Mugyenyi, the extension of the nomination for candidates intending to contest in the Local Government Councils was decided upon after it was realised that there was overwhelming number of people at registration centers who intended to be nominated.

“Due to high numbers of aspirants at the nomination centers since the beginning of the excercise and according to the powers vested in the Commission under Section 50 of the Electoral Commission Act, the Election Commission has taken a decision to extend the nomination exercise” The statement signed by Byabakama Mugyenyi reads in part.

He said that the exercise will continue tomorrow from 9:00 am to 5: 00 pm at the gazzated nomination centers and will also work during the weekend.

He however said that after this extended period, there will be no further extension and therefore all aspiring candidates should utilise this period to get nominated.
