NTUNGAMO- The State Minister of Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Mwesigwa Rukutana is still leading the recount in the Rushenyi county NRM Parliamentary flag bearer for the 2021 general election.
According to sources from the NRM headquarters at Kyandondo road, the Minister Rukutana is still leading his closest opponent Naome Kabasharira with 20 votes after tallying votes from over 12 polling stations that had not been counted.
The National Resistance Movement Party Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi decided to recount the election results in which the NRM returning officer declared Kabasharira winner having trounced Minister Mwesigwa Rukutana with 40 votes in September 4th 2020 election.
Kabasharira had according to the previous results garnered 24,006 while Rukutana polled 23,966 votes.
“Tanga Odoi has of now announced that Rukutana is still leading though the Kabasharira team claims that Nyakahita Cell in Rugarama Greater Sub County never voted. Odoi has now given both parties only two days to announce the winner of the Rushenyi County Parliamentary race” A source at NRM head office told this Online Publication.
The Privy source added that it is proved beyond doubt that the said cell voted.
Rukutana’s team petitioned the NRM EC headquarters with overwhelming evidence to overturn the results announced in Ntungamo weeks ago.
The Ntungamo district National Resistance Movement returning officer Mirembe Maria declared Kabasharira the winner. The declaration form was however not signed by Rukutana’s agent, who out rightly disagreed with the results.
Accordingly, Rubaare Sub County, which is considered Rukutana’s stronghold didn’t vote after the register disappeared.
Voting was deferred to Saturday, the same day when chaos broke out in the area resulting into multiple shooting and injuring of Rukutana’s rival’s loyalists.
As a result Minister Rukutana was sent to prison battling several charges; attempted murder, theft of a gun, malicious damage and assault. However today the Minister was released on bail at Ntungamo magistrate court on a Ugx 4M cash bail.
