KAMPALA- Police in Kampala today morning arrested a city Journalist, Bassajja Mivule on allegations of spreading sectarianism in the country.
Mivule was arrested while at Baba TV studio which is based in Ntinda.
According to staff at Baba TV, police officers attached to the Crime Intelligence Department (CID) raided the offices and picked Bassajja Mivule. He was later led into a van and whisked away to an unknown destination.
Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga confirmed the arrest in Tuesday’s press briefing in Kampala.
According to Enanga, Mivule had been recording and spreading videos which according to Police promote sectarianism.
CP Enanga added that these videos were being scrutinized and that the journalist would be charged accordingly.
In one of the videos, he posted on Facebook just hours before his arrest; Mivule said he hated “these people” because they were doing the same things that dictators Idi Amin and Milton Obote were doing.
Speaking at the same press conference, the Government spokesperson said the Government is stepping up efforts to root out people who are airing divisive messages in the media.
Their arrest comes just days after a group of comedians popularly known as ‘Bizonto’ were also arrested by Police on the same counts.They were arrested on Friday from Radio Simba and they include; Ssabakaki Simon Peter alias Akozonto akato, Ssewanja Julius (Ssabazonto), Mbabali Merceli (Giant zonto), Gold Kimatono, Jjaja zonto and Kamya Saul Muro (Baryanengwe).
