KAMPALA- The Uganda Episcopal Conference, the Organisation mandated to run the affairs of the Catholic Church in Uganda has directed the all Dioceses in the country to temporarily suspend payment of its staff in the Catholic founded private schools.
According to a letter dated July 13th 2020, signed by National Executive Secretary for Education Rev Fr Ronald Okello, and addressed to all Diocesan Education Secretaries, they were asked to stop the payment of the teachers.
“As we continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic that is affecting our country and the world over, and more especially the education sector, we kindly advise you to temporarily suspend payments of your staff in our private schools” The letter signed by Fr Okello reads.
The National Executive Secretary for Education at the Uganda Episcopal Conference however asked the Diocesan Secretaries to notify the teachers and mutually agree with them on unpaid leave especially those who are on active contracts.
Fr Okello further advised that the Diocesan Secretaries should notify NSSF and URA about the measure that has been undertaken to avoid penalties arising from the statutory deductions since no one is sure of when the schools will be reopened.
