KAMPALA- Fire has gutted the right side of Makerere University Main building – Ivory tower as confirmed by the university social media account.
Large swaths of thick smoke and fire were seen billowing from the right side of the building as the firefighters and the Uganda Police Force at the scene tried to put out the fire.
The official twitter account for the University tweeted “The fire brigade is on the ground. Everyone is trying their best. The fire is heavy and sprouting from the right side of the Building. The fire flames are heavy coming through the right side of the roof which has sunk in. We all need to pray for the Ivory Tower.”
By press time the cause of the fire had not been established.
Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda’s largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922.
Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates.
The University was set to open this month for final year students of Makerere University School of Medicine, also known as the Makerere University Medical School.
