RUBANDA- Six more inmates in Rubanda government prison, Rubanda district have tested positive for Covid-19, days after registering the first case in the same prison.
On 30th September, an inmate at Rubanda Government Prison tested positive for Covid 19. This was after he presented signs similar to that of the virus which prompted the district Covid 19 task force to pick samples from him for examination at Uganda Virus Research Institute, which later turned out to be positive.
The case was registered after 14 inmates had been transferred from Kisoro Central Police Station in Kisoro district to Rubanda Government Prison after an inmate at Kisoro prison tested positive for the virus early last month. The 14 were brought to Rubanda to avoid further spread of the virus among inmates in Kisoro prison.
The Rubanda District Health Officer, Dr Abdon Birungi told our reporter today that after registering the first case, they decided to take samples of 33 inmates including wardens to Uganda Virus Research Institute Kampala to detect any possibilities of contact transmission.
Dr Birungi further confirmed to our reporter that six of the samples from the 33 inmates and wardens tested, turned out positive. This brings a total of Covid 19 inmates at Rubanda government Prison to 7.
Speaking to our reporter on phone, the Uganda Prisons Spokesperson Frank Baine said that they are arranging to transport the patients to Jinja Prisons treatment Centre for further management of the positive inmates.
