The Uganda People’s Defence Forces – UPDF has clarified that the appointment of Gen Edward Kale Kayihura as the Coordinator of Intelligence Services has not yet been confirmed. Social media was rife with talk of the general being reinstated back into security circles after a turbulent few years on katebe and jail in equal measure.
Speaking on behalf of the UPDF, the forces Spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire said the news of the appointment of Gen Kayihura is still hearsay to them since they have not received any official confirmation from the appointing authority.
The once feared police chief was relieved of his duties in a move by president Yoweri Museveni yo remove what he termed as “weevils” that were hiding under the police force to commit crimes. He was henceforth sacked alongside then security minister Gen Henry Tumukunde with the two top military officials publicly bickering.
If the news of Kayihura’s reappointment is true, it will mark a turnaround for a man who was already written off as another one that was used and dumped. Despite being arranged before the military court martial and jailed, Kayihura’s was passionately defended by President Yoweri Museveni after the announcement of US sanctions against the former police chief. Kayihura’s has been charged over his role in the illegal repatriation to Rwanda of refugees wanted there. Gen Kayihura also was charged with “failure to protect war materials”, charges that he vehemently denies.
