NTUNGAMO- Over 10 people have on Thursday September 17th 2020 been arrested by the police in Ntungamo District after they attempted to protest the NRM electoral commission re-tallying of the Rushenyi county NRM primary elections.
In the National Resistance Movement primary elections held on September 4th 2020, the former Ntungamo woman Member of Parliament Hon Naome Kabasharira was declared by the District party’s Returning Officer as the winner on September 6th 2020.
Samson Kasasira the Rwizi region police spokesman confirmed the arrest saying there was an anticipated situation in Rubaare town with the protesters wanting to disrupt business and cause confusion.
“Its true we have over 10 e were arrested following links and intelligence reports blocking protests before they stranded. Meanwhile voters in Nyakahita village Katungamo parish Rugarama Sub County protested being involved in the chaos of the Rushenyi elections yet they were not given a chance to vote like other villages in the district with disruptions caused by election officials posted to the village.
Ben Mugyenyi, a resident of Nyakahita described Dr Tanga’s results as absurd. He said they had lined up to vote with Kabasharira’s people lining up in two lines while Mr Rukutana’s had half a line before army men came and started beating them up dispersing them on command of Rukutana’s wife. He said they arrested the presiding officer and up to now have been waiting for their day to vote.
Mwikirize Allen, a resident said they want the NRM electoral commission to organize fresh voting in the village if it’s the village to determine the election but not the lies that they voted. Several other residents in different sub counties are threatening to demonstrate from Friday until the final results are announced.
